  • The NYT reports that US officials are questioning Putin about reality as Russia attacks Ukraine.

  • The stakes in the conflict were raised on Sunday when Putin placed Russia's nuclear arsenal at a high alert.

  • He may be acting crazy to deter action from the West.

According to The New York Times, US intelligence agencies are considering the possibility that Putin has lost touch with reality.

It followed a series of erratic public performances by the Russian leader, and gained a new intensity after he increased Russia's level of nuclear readiness Sunday.

Last week, Putin humiliated and berated his foreign intelligence chief, Sergey Naryshkin.

He tried to rewrite history by denying that Ukraine is an independent country in a speech broadcast moments before Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine last week.

Previously, Putin was seen as brutal but rational. Some believe that his isolation may have affected his sense of reality.

His recent meetings with top officials and foreign leaders have been bizarre, with the Russian leader seated at one end of a huge table and the other at another in an apparent bid to keep infections at bay.

Michael McFaul, a former US ambassador to Russia, said in a Sunday appearance that he has been more isolated under Covid.

According to the Times, another school of thought among US intelligence officials is that Putin may be bluffing.

He is acting like a madman in order to confuse and disconcert the West. According to the Times report, the assessment is part of a vast array of material being used by the Biden administration to judge its response.

It is a version of President Richard Nixon's so-called "madman theory" that he was willing to launch a nuclear strike on Vietnam. His hope was that North Vietnamese leaders would come to the negotiating table and end the Vietnam War.

Le Beck Institute's security analyst picked up on the idea. He wrote that there is a Madman theory in international relations which is to make your adversary be cautious so as to appear irrational. If this is what Putin is doing, then he is very good at it.

One of the key questions of the Ukraine crisis has been the nature of Putin's intentions.

Many western analysts believed that Putin was bluffing when he threatened to invade the Ukrainian border in order to get security concessions from the West.

Last week, Putin ordered a full scale invasion of Europe, which will cause a security crisis for decades.

  • During the Ukraine crisis, Turkey pledged to block some Russian warships from passing through its waters to the Black Sea, which could help mend its relationship with NATO. Over the next few days, a lot of Russian ships waiting to make the journey will test Ankara's resolve and show how far it is willing to go in changing its delicate diplomatic balance between east and west. On Sunday, Turkey changed its rhetoric to call the assault on Ukraine a war, a move that would allow Ankara to use parts of an international pact to limit the transit of some Russian warships from the Mediterranean to the Black Sea.

The stakes could hardly be higher now that Russia and the West have both put out their nuclear options. This is not just about Ukraine anymore, it has turned into a full-blown confrontation between nuclear powers. If the conflict continues to escalate.
