The UK government is considering banning Russian ships from sailing into British ports after a Russian oil tanker is expected to dock in the UK on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, the ship owned by Russian shipping company Sovcom Flot is expected to arrive at Flotta Terminal in Orkney, Scotland.

More than 3000 people have signed a petition calling for the UK to refuse entry to the Sovcom Flott vessel.

The Member of Parliament for Orkney and Shetland has urged the Prime Minister to stop Russian-owned vessels from entering British ports.

It is imperative that you act without delay to ensure that Sovcomflot is denied access to British ports, according to a letter posted on the internet.

The government has told the Orkney Islands Council that the Russian ship can dock.

We are bound by our legal obligations to accept the vessel until the UK government tells us otherwise.

The Orkney Islands Council didn't reply immediately to Insider's request for comment.

The UK government is aware of the concerns about Russian ships docking in the UK and is working quickly to explore a range of measures to restrict access for them.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said on Saturday that Turkey has banned all of Russia's warships from entering the Black Sea.

A ban on Russian-owned vessels would add to the sanctions placed on the country.

The UK and the European Union have banned all Russian airlines from flying in their airspace.

  • During the Ukraine crisis, Turkey pledged to block some Russian warships from passing through its waters to the Black Sea, which could help mend its relationship with NATO. Over the next few days, a lot of Russian ships waiting to make the journey will test Ankara's resolve and show how far it is willing to go in changing its delicate diplomatic balance between east and west. On Sunday, Turkey changed its rhetoric to call the assault on Ukraine a war, a move that would allow Ankara to use parts of an international pact to limit the transit of some Russian warships from the Mediterranean to the Black Sea.
