German stakeholder in Nord Stream 1 natural gas pipeline rejects calls to shut it down in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine

According to the Rheinische Post newspaper, E.ON rejected calls from Poland to shut down the Nord Stream 1 natural gas line.

The publication reported that the Prime Minister of Poland asked operators of the offshore line to shut it down because of the situation in Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin sent troops into Ukraine on Tuesday, which caused Germany to suspend plans for the Nord Stream 2 line.

E.ON told the Rheinische Post that the project was separate from the second one.

Russian state-controlled energy firm Gazprom is the majority owner.

Europe gets around 40% of its gas supply from Russia. From Wednesday to Thursday, natural-gas exports from Russia to Europe through Ukraine increased by nearly 38%.

Natural gas from Russia to Germany has been transported via the Baltic Sea. It is able to transport up to 971 billion cubic feet of natural gas a year.

Nord Stream 2 is meant to be used as a substitute for Nord Stream 1. The work was done in September but the work has not been certified by Germany. The project was halted last week by the German Chancellor after Russian forces entered the two eastern regions of Ukraine.

Putin said that the invasion of Ukraine was an act of self-defense against NATO expansion into eastern Europe. Financial sanctions against Russia include freezing bank assets and banning imports and exports.
