CODA, a coming-of-age dramedy about a child of deafness, became the first movie with a majority to win an award at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Marlee Matlin gave a powerful speech about the impact of the award during the acceptance speech.
You are all our peers. We have come a long way. I've been seeing work out there for 35 years. Matlin said that he had watched all of your films and that he paid the deepest respect to all of you.
This shows that we, the deafness actors, can work just as well as anyone else. We are looking forward to more opportunities for actors of the deafness community.
Matlin finished her speech by teaching the crowd how to use American Sign Language.
