The Chinese embassy in Ukraine asked its citizens in the country to not highlight their identities in public.

The embassy advised Chinese nationals to display their national flag while driving.

In a post on Saturday, the embassy said that there is an increase in extreme behavior in Ukraine that poses heightened security risks for Chinese citizens.

The embassy told Chinese nationals not to highlight their identity or display identifying symbols.

Even as Russia is under increasing pressure from the west, China has sought to walk a fine line in its approach to the invasion.

At a press conference on Thursday organized by China's foreign ministry, China avoided calling Russia's actions an invasion. On a call with Putin on Friday, the Chinese president urged him to resolve the situation through negotiations with Zelensky. Zelensky's office said on Sunday that Russian and Ukrainian delegations have agreed to meet to discuss the border.

The Global Times reported on Monday that at least one Chinese businesswoman based in Kyiv was harassed as China continued to pursue its current position on the conflict.

She was heckled by locals at a gas station on Saturday. She was quoted as saying that Chinese students in Ukranian had to head to bomb shelters in groups to avoid being harassed.

The businesswoman said that some agitated young Ukrainians must be thinking that China is on the side of Russia.
