  • The manager of the luxury hotel that was the former home of Nelson Mandela said that Bill Clinton often visited.

  • Clinton would request the same meals as Maritz.

  • He said that Clinton would be told to thank the chef when he enjoyed meals at the house.

The manager of Sanctuary Mandela, a new luxury hotel that was formerly the residence of South Africa's first president, said that Bill Clinton was a regular visitor.

The manager of the sanctuary, which is a museum, told Insider that Clinton would ask to eat the same meals as Mandela.

Most of his presidency that spanned 1994 to 1999 was at the 9-bedroom property, according to Maritz. According to the sanctuary's website, Naomi Campbell, who Maritz said would often bring him flowers, and Oprah Winfrey were some of the high-profile guests that were welcomed to the sanctuary during this time.

One notable guest would be Bill Clinton. Maritz told Insider that the current chef at the hotel, Xoliswa Ndoyiya, who was the personal chef for 18 years, shared details about these visits.

Maritz said that he visited to a point where he would want to eat exactly what Madiba used to eat. The manager said that he was told that when Clinton enjoyed meals prepared by her, he would send the president to the kitchen to thank her personally.

Clinton wrote an essay for Vanity Fair in December of last year, four days after the death of Madiba.

I was the first American president to visit South Africa. President Mandela and I became friends. Clinton wrote that they had met at the Democratic convention in New York. He traveled to South Africa to check in on the Clinton Foundation and spent time with his friend on his birthday.

In November, Sanctuary Mandela opened its doors to guests. The property was bequeathed to Makgatho Mandela, who died in March 2021, after his children decided to sell it.

The rooms at the sanctuary range from $260 per night to $1,000 per night. Maritz said it was created in conjunction with the Nelson Mandela Foundation and has artworks from its archives.

The sanctuary displays his photographs and letters on the walls of each suite and labels each room with one of his many names. The 36-seater restaurant is named after a painting of him and Clinton. Maritz said that in the painting, they are sitting together in a park having an insightful discussion.

oxtail stew, samp and beans, and samp risotto are some of the foods that Clinton would have tried, according to Maritz.

Clinton spoke about his long-term relationship with Mandela on the day he died.

He recalled the early days of their friendship, saying that he went out of his way to be his friend. Talk to me about what's going on. Raising kids. Dealing with disappointment. Managing anger. He is an astonishing human being.

Maritz hopes the sanctuary will invite guests from all over the world who want to learn more about the man.
