A letter written to the leaders of the Senate Judiciary Committee by Judge Thomas R. Griffith, a retired Bush appointee to the D.C. Circuit of Appeals, endorsed Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson's nomination to the Supreme Court.

Jackson's nomination kicks off a monthlong process to confirm what would be the first Black woman to sit on the nation's highest court. The Biden administration is trying to get Republican votes in the Senate.

A person familiar with the matter told a website that several Republican legal experts will be speaking out this week in favor of Jackson.

  • The same appellate court that Jackson now sits on was nominated by George W. Bush to serve by him. He is active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the same faith as a Republican courted by Democrats, Sen. Romney.

  • During his speech last week, President Biden gave him a shout out.

Judge Jackson has a demonstrated record of excellence, and I believe, based upon her work as a trial judge when I served on the Court of Appeals, that she will adjudicate based on the facts and the law.

  • In his letter to the two senators, Griffith highlighted Jackson's "careful approach, extraordinary judicial understanding and collegial manner."

  • Jackson has the support of the Fraternal Order of Police, which is the largest policing organization in the country.

Jackson was confirmed last year to the D.C. Circuit, a federal appeals court that often serves as a stepping stone to the Supreme Court, with the support of all 50 Democratic senators and three Republicans.

  • Nominees to the Supreme Court are not the same as those for the Senate Judiciary Committee.

  • Even if the nominee has gone through the lower court confirmation process before, I think a lot of the members of the committee will be looking at this again.

One of the three Republicans who voted for Jackson last June says so herself.

  • She said in a statement that voting to confirm an individual to a lower court does not signal how she will vote for a Supreme Court justice.

Democrats are courting Sen. Susan Collins, a Republican who voted for Jackson.

  • According to Collins, before Biden announced his pick, he called her twice to discuss candidates, and once early on in the process.

  • After Biden announced his pick last Friday, Collins wrote in a statement, "Ketanji Brown Jackson is an experienced federal judge with impressive academic and legal credentials."

Lindsey Graham, the third Republican to back Jackson last year, pulled for another Supreme Court candidate from his home state.

  • The radical Left has won President Biden over again, he complained after Jackson was named.

  • Romney told CNN on Sunday that her nomination and confirmation would be historic. She deserves a very careful look, a very deep dive, like anyone nominated by the president of the United States. I hope that I can support her in the final analysis, because I will provide fresh eyes to that evaluation.
