Kathy Hochul said Sunday that the statewide masking requirement will be lifted by March 2.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams said he was considering lifting vaccine mandates on restaurants, bars and theaters if infections continue to decline.

Adams said in a statement that a mask mandate could be lifted. The decision won't come until Friday after a full week of classes for students in the country's largest school system.

The city and state were once the epicenter of the global Pandemic.

The day has come, Hochul said at the press conference.

The new guidance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that most Americans can take a break from wearing masks.

Hochul said that he was confident that the time was right to lift the mask requirements.

State officials said the average number of new cases was less than 1,700 for the first time since late July. Hospitalizations and deaths have fallen rapidly.

The CDC guidelines for other indoor spaces aren't binding, meaning cities and institutions can set their own rules. Hochul said that parents could still choose to send their children to school in masks, and that counties and cities could keep their own mandates in place.

The new rules apply to children older than 2 years old.

Hochul said Adams was consulted before her announcement.

Hochul said she remained steadfast in sticking with experts and health data as her guide despite the criticism.

Hochul let the broad mask mandate for most indoor settings expire, but said the schools requirement would remain in place. She promised to revisit the schools question by the first week of March.

The broad mask mandate was put in place during the COVID-19 surge.

In some places, masks are still required, including public transit, homeless shelters, jails and prisons, adult care facilities and healthcare settings.

Lifting the vaccine requirements would be positive for restaurants, bars and theaters according to Andrew Rigie, executive director of the NYC Hospitality Alliance.

We need to be smart and safe and modify mandates as risks are reduced. Andrew Rigie, executive director, NYC Hospitality Alliance, said in a text message to The Associate Press that he wouldn't be surprised if some businesses decided to keep it in place.

The mayor said that his decisions would be influenced by key metrics and that he was hoping to begin lifting restrictions.

New York City's numbers continue to go down, as long as the indicators show a low level of risk.

The Key2NYC program was put in place last August to put pressure on New Yorkers to get vaccinations or risk losing access to many of the city's attractions.

  • New York City, the first major U.S. metropolis to require vaccines indoors, will lift its mandate for indoor businesses, dining and events in the coming days.

  • Guidelines for indoor masking were relaxed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday. The CDC recommends masking only in areas of high COVID-19 transmission. The state health department website shows that the positive test rate in New York was 1.9% on Friday, down from 20% in early January.

  • New York City Mayor Eric Adams said on Sunday that a dramatic drop in coronaviruses could lead to the lifting of vaccine mandates on restaurants, bars and theaters.

  • The Biden administration made 500 million free COVID-19 tests available to the public, but only half of them have been claimed. There are fewer than 100,000 orders a day for the packages of four free rapid tests per household.

  • Where should people wear a mask when traveling? In far fewer places is the answer according to new recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC relaxed mask recommendations for most of the country under a new framework to monitor coronaviruses that affect 70% of Americans. The new recommendations factor in case numbers as always, but also consider hospitalizations and hospital capacity.
