John Szeles, known in the entertainment world as The Amazing Johnathan, a Las Vegas-based comic-magician with metro Detroit roots, died Tuesday.

He was 63 years old.

A well-known pranker and skilled illusionist, Szeles was briefly suspected of faking his terminal illness, as documented in the film "The Amazing Johnathan Documentary."

At a show in Las Vegas, Szeles said that he had one year to live and that he had been diagnosed with severe cardiomyopathy. The audience thought it was a joke.

His return to the stage was documented in the film. During the course of filming, it became clear that he was gravely ill.

The Freep Film Festival has a documentary with a startling twist.

The Neptune Society of Las Vegas confirmed Friday that it was coordinating services with his family after he died. The magician's wife said he had been in the hospital.

John Edward Szeles was born in Detroit and ended up in Las Vegas.

Ben Berman is the director of The Amazing Johnathan Documentary, which is available on Hulu.

Berman said that he was pranked by Szeles at his home.

He knocked on the magician's door for 15 minutes before he opened it using a walker. Berman said a horror washed over him as he realized he had set himself up to make a documentary about someone who is dying. After a few seconds, Szeles looked at Berman and said, "I'm just f---ing with you."

The documentary was shown at the Freep Film Festival in Detroit and won the Best of Festival award.

The executive director of the festival said that he was easily one of the most memorable guests to ever appear.

Kevin Lepine, a metro Detroit native, was friends with Szeles for the past 11 years. They were groomsmen at each other's weddings.

Lepine said that he was his big brother.

Berman said that Szeles was a great painter and that he was very confident in himself and his ideas.

The career of Szeles spanned over 35 years. He was a regular at Detroit comedy clubs and appeared on hundreds of television shows.

The longest running comedy/magic show in Vegas has been at the Golden Nugget Las Vegas Hotel and Casino since 2001.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal named him one of the Top Ten Acts in Vegas.

During a performance at the Comedy Castle in Royal Oak, Szeles proposed to Synn on stage.

"He marched to his own drummer, and I met him when he was in his early 20s, and still lived in Michigan."

Johnathan was from the area. We sold out all the shows when he came to town.

His last few years were spent at home with his wife and daughter, according to his website.

He had multiple documentaries filmed about his life when he felt well.

He lived for so long because of his wife, said Lepine. She kept him as healthy as possible.

He never lost that childhood wonder, according to Lepine.
