According to excerpts published in a forthcoming book, former US Attorney General Bill Barr wrote that the possibility of former President Donald Trump running for the White House again was "dismaying" and encouraged the Republican Party to look for new candidates.

In the book, "One Damn Thing After Another", Barr stated that Trump's bellicosity diminished him and the office, while revealing that he started to feel that the then-president only cared about himself.

The attorney general was Barr from February to December 2020.

Country and principle took second place, he remarked in the book, recalling his personal revelations about Trump while navigating the last few months in his role.

We need leaders who are capable of fighting and punching, but also persuading and advocating for an uplifting vision of what it means to be an American. Donald Trump has shown that he has neither the temperament nor persuasive powers that are needed for positive leadership.

The former attorney general, who was criticized during his tenure for being too deferential to Trump, frames himself in the book as an individual who rejected any pressure campaigns from the then-president.

The former attorney general recalled how disappointed he was that Trump didn't prosecute James Comey for his handling of bureau memos.

I am shocked, Bill. I am disgusted. The then-president told Barr that he was not happy about it, The Post reported.

People are worthwhile to Trump only as utensils. They are useless when they don't help him get what he wants. When Trump saw that I was not willing to bend the law to do his bidding, he began to disengage.

Barr wrote that he and other White House attorneys met on Mondays for lunch to come up with legally problematic ideas, including Trump's desire to end birthright citizenship.

Jeff Sessions had a tumultuous tenure in the administration after recusing himself from the Russia investigation and was replaced by Barr.

The book will be released on March 8.
