It began with lies.

Hitler's forces crossed the border into Poland. The German chancellor said that ethnic Germans were being mistreated. German operatives dressed as Poles staged an attack on a German radio station, yelling anti-German threats into the microphone.

The most devastating war in the history of the world began with that lie.

It's too early to know how devastating this latest European war will be, how many will die, how many will be homeless, and how the repercussions will play out across the globe. There is an ominous resonance in the lies from which it came.

Russian leader Vladimir Putin claimed he had no intention of invading Ukraine, even as he massed troops on that country's border. He said Russia would recognize two regions. He announced a military operation aimed at peacekeeping and democratization before the Russians began to pound the country.

Now, as before, lies. What strikes you is the threadbare flimsiness of them, not just the brazenness of them. At the end of the day, was anyone really expected to believe that Poland, which had more horses than tanks, had suddenly decided to attack its heavily armed neighbor?

Putin's lies are not good. He would have us believe that his forces were needed to keep the peace in a nation that was at peace and to evict Nazis from a nation with a president who is a Jew. When you don't care what anyone thinks, you tell these kinds of lies. Their contempt is expressed by their very shabbyness.

The fact that Donald Trump, Tucker Carlson, J.D., and other denizens of the American right either lionize or dismiss this liar.

Like Putin, a lot of the right's loyalty is to the power of the strongman, who is free to do as he pleases. That is what they almost imposed in 2016 It is what they promise in a few years. If you are not frightened, you are not paying attention.

This is a long time coming. A little more than a quarter century ago, a House speaker named Newt Gingrich declared politics war and an upstart cable network called Fox declared facts optional. It was called a conservative resurgence, but it was actually the beginning of the kingdom of lies our country has become.

Trump claims the feeling is mutual and that he likes Putin. They both recognize themselves in the other.

What they have in common is a transactional disdain for the truth and a naive expectation of it. Hillary Clinton presented a red button to her Russian counterpart, but they kept being a thugocracy. Trump was going to become president any second now, but he remained a willful child. Trump cheers for his tormentor while families seek refuge in Ukrainian subways.

No one will be surprised.

Lying tends to end in carnage.
