The European Union said on Sunday that it will purchase and deliver weapons to Ukraine, as well as strengthen sanctions against Russia.

In an announcement on Sunday, Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Union Commission, called the effort a Watershed moment.

The European Union will finance the purchase and delivery of weapons and other equipment for the first time.

The global support for Ukraine has intensified in the wake of the Russian invasion of the country.

On Sunday, Russian President Vladimir Putin put Russia's nuclear deterrent forces on high alert.

Leyen explained that the EU's airspace ban will include a prohibition on all Russian-owned, Russian-registered, and Russian-controlled aircraft from taking off, landing, or flying over the territory.

She said that the airspace would be closed to all Russian planes and private jets.

Leyen said that the organization is banning state-owned Russian media outlets and creating tools to ban toxic and harmful information in Europe.

Leyen said that Russia Today and Sputnik would no longer be able to spread their lies to justify Putin's war.
