The new starters for Pokémon Violet & Scarlet, Sprigatito, Fuecoco and Quaxly.

It was only about a month since Pok E9;mon Arceus was released on the Nintendo Switch, but it has been clear for a long time that Game Freak's evolution of their classic monster fighting franchise is a reality. Nintendo has other plans and is already looking to the future, even though you wouldn't be wrong in thinking that there could've been a chance for DLC.

Nintendo ended their Pokémon Day livestream with a look at Gen 9 of the main series. Watching the trailer and seeing the scope of this brand new region really makes you think about how much of a test it was for the next pair of mainline games. Seeing Pokémon look a little more lively in the world counts for a lot, even in these brief snippets, and it looks like human may be able to get near some in the cities.

The Hisui Region could leave a bit to be desired, as the core loop for that particular game was filled out by Arceus. It is possible that returning to the standard formula of going to gym and getting badges will provide a stronger structure to Arceus, one that will hopefully mirror the feeling of bigness that the anime has usually managed to convey. Arceus has done a good job of having players rethink their connections with the monsters who could kick their ass, so hopefully the non-combat offerings that Arceus provided return as well.

It was a foregone conclusion that Gen 9 was going to happen, but given that Arceus has only been out for a month, it feels a little too soon to be announcing this new generation to get fans excited. The graphics and more visual variety that have been criticized are almost certainly being addressed. Game Freak may have done some good by letting things settle before embarking on a brand new adventure, as the franchise has suffered in the past for being annual.

The Nintendo Switch will have Pokémon.
