It just makes me ill to see people inside the Republican Party praise Putin as he wages war against Ukraine, said Sen. Romney. Romney described it as "almost treasonous" to side with Putin.

Romney said during an interview on CNN's "State of the Union" that a lot of people are changing their stripes as they see the response of the world.

How can anyone in this country, which loves freedom, side with a man who is an oppressor, a dictator, and imprisons his political opponents? It is almost treasonous to see people do that.

Romney did not name who he was talking about, but the Utah senator is a critic of former President Donald Trump, who has praised Putin's Ukraine strategy as "genius" and showered the autocratic Russian with praise throughout his presidency.

On Saturday, Trump praised the bravery of Zelensky, whom he called a "brave man", for standing firm against Moscow. Putin is playing Biden like a drum, and it is not a pretty thing to watch, said Trump Saturday at the Conservative Political Action Conference.

The stance of Trump stands in stark contrast to decades of hardline anti-Moscow orthodoxy within the Republican Party. Romney drew mockery from Obama for describing Russia as America's No. 1 geopolitical foe.

The GOP leaders of both the Senate and House have maintained the party's traditional stance on Russia. There have been clear deviations beyond Trump.

A Yahoo News/YouGov poll conducted earlier this month found that Trump voters were twice as likely as Biden voters to say that the Russia-Ukraine conflict is not America's business.

In a recent interview, a Republican Senate candidate in Ohio stated that he doesn't care what happens to Ukraine.

Tucker Carlson, a top-rated Fox News host, has downplayed the crisis, asking why we wouldn't take the side of Russia.

Romney was asked if his "almost treasonous" line would apply to Trump. Romney didn't respond.

He said that standing up for freedom is the right thing to do in America, and anything less than that is not worthy of American support.
