There were no laughs in the cold open, instead there was a moving tribute to Ukraine. The Ukrainian Chorus of New York was introduced by Kate McKinnon and Cecily Strong. The choir sang a song calledPrayer for Ukraine. There is a deep connection between The Chorus and both Ukraine and the U.S. The Chorus was created by Ukrainian immigrants in the 1940s to preserve their heritage and celebrate music. The name of the capital was spelled out by a table filled with candles. After 9/11, Paul Simon sang "The Boxer" as first responders and then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani stood by. That's good. John Mulaney hosted the show for the 5th time, and joked about his cocaine addiction and rehab stint, saying, "It's wonderful to be in a place that always emphasized sobriety and mental health."
