According to sources, Jesse Marsch is the leading contender to succeed him as the new leader of Leeds United.

The week began with a 6-0 defeat at the hands of the Reds on Wednesday and then a loss at home to Spurs on Saturday.

Sources say that Marsch is the No.1 candidate for the Elland Road job, five months after he took charge.

He won two Austrian league titles. He was the manager of the New York Red Bulls and the Montreal Impact. Marsch was employed as an assistant by the interim manager of Manchester United.

The toughest decision I have had to make during my tenure at the club was taking into account all the success Marcelo has had at the club.

The good times returned to Elland Road after three incredible campaigns with Marcelo as our head coach. He brought a winning mentality to the club. The moments created, particularly in the 2019/20 season and winning promotion to the premier league, will live on in my and the fans' memories.

I have to act in the best interest of the club and I believe a change is required now that we are in the top flight. Results and performances have not met our expectations.

We find ourselves in a precarious league position and I feel now is the right time to bring in a new head coach, in order to have an impact in the final stages of the season.

The club won the Championship in 2020 to return to the top-flight after a 16-year absence.

After finishing ninth in their first season back in the top flight, a difficult second season saw them lose five of their last six games. A run of four straight league defeats, in which he conceded 17 goals, left him with a four-point deficit to make up with two games to go.

Director of football Victor Orta said that since arriving at the club, he had seen a huge impact.

He has created a legacy by overseeing major infrastructure improvements, unifying the supporters and the players, and giving a clear pathway for young players to transition into the first team.

It is disappointing his reign has had to end this way, given the special times we have enjoyed in recent years, which have been some of the best in my career, but we cannot hide from recent results.

I would like to thank him for his dedication and I wish him good fortune going forward.

More information will be released in due course about the plans for a permanent tribute to Bielsa at Elland Road.
