The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine said in a statement on Saturday that a group of 13 border guards who were thought to have been killed may still be alive.

The border agency believes that the defenders of Zmiinyi may be alive.

Before the defenders lost contact, there was preliminary information that border guards may be dead.

The border agency said it had received information about their location and was working to identify their soldiers.

We hope that the boys will return home soon.

Reports say that 13 border guards on Zmiinyi Island died when they refused to surrender to a Russian ship.

The encounter quickly went viral and prompted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to announce that he would posthumously award all the soldiers the Hero of Ukraine award.

Russian media reported that they had been captured by Russian forces and were taken to the largest city on the Russian-controlled Crimea Peninsula.

It is not clear where the group could be, as this information has not been confirmed.

In the Black Sea about 30 miles off the coast of Ukraine, there is Snake Island, which has been the subject of a territorial dispute between Russia and Ukraine.

Zelensky once said that the island was Ukrainian land and that they would defend it with all their might.
