Before the defenders lost contact, there was preliminary information that border guards may be dead.
The border agency said it had received information about their location and was working to identify their soldiers.

Reports say that 13 border guards on Zmiinyi Island died when they refused to surrender to a Russian ship.

Russian media reported that they had been captured by Russian forces and were taken to the largest city on the Russian-controlled Crimea Peninsula.
