This week's startup news and trends will be the subject of a new weekly column. This will be in your inbox if you subscribe here.
I'm doing an abbreviated newsletter this week as I want to amplify the brave journalists on the ground reporting about this scary time. The invasion of Ukraine is a story that affects all of us, whether we are on the ground there or not. It is hard to celebrate a funding round when scary times are present.
I urge you to read the story about how the tech industry is responding to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. It is clear that the situation is already a tech story. Some of the world's biggest VCs are backing some of the startup companies that are scrambling to support employees and operations.
According to sources, startup founders are mostly giving financial assistance to employees who are in Ukraine or other countries. The money is supposed to help people leave the country. To see what is the best course of action, founders are forming groups on the messaging service to see what's best.
The startups that could make a difference in how consumers gain or share information during a new war. Matthew Prince, the chief executive of Cloudflare, said that the company had removed all of their customer's cryptographic material from their server in Ukranian as a response to the new war. In case the data center is compromised, the move is to protect customer data.
What could US technology companies do to deter Putin's invasion?
We are still a tech news pub with a focus on business, finance and startups. The invasion is going to affect a lot of things. We serve our audience the best we can by telling them what they need to know, and that's what we do with any other major event.
You can always take a break and close this tab. You can support me by sharing this newsletter or following me on social media.
Gloria Lin is the brains behind ApplePay. Mary Ann Azevedo gave readers a first look at the company that wants to combine construction and technology.
It is important because it is always a signal when someone with a successful track record picks up the baton. Can Lin bring her understanding of consumer habits to an industry that has yet to be solved?
Mentions of honorable nature.
Alex and I talked about the effects of the Great Resignation on the employee on Equity this week. We talked about how the labor market has changed and how startups might be able to compete with Big Tech. Is any company going to be able to beat Meta on comp? Probably not.
It appears that the forces driving more venture capital into early-stage companies are not far from the causes of the labor shortage. Everyone wants a return on their labor or capital. That means a tight hiring market.
Bring on the portable benefits.

Chris Gates is moving on to other opportunities. My eyes have been puffy all week because of the relationship between a co-host and a producer. Thanks for making me feel like I have something important to say, and for editing out the ums and likes. Stay up to date on Chris' journey by following him on social media and watching an episode next week in which we celebrate a huge Equity milestone.
