Two years after the fifth season finale, the show will return to STARZ in just over a week. The saga of Outlander is going to get bigger if Starz is correct. Variety is reporting that a new series is in the works. Matthew B. Roberts, the executive producer and showrunner of the show, has already been hired to write and executive produce the new prequel. The room is being assembled with an eye to begin work in the coming weeks, according to Variety.
Diana Gabaldon created the franchise in 1991 with the debut of her book. Readers were introduced to a World War II nurse namedClaire Randall who was mysteriously transported back to 1743 in the Scottish Highlands. Jamie Fraser, the man who becomes her only true ally in this time period, is taken in by the MacKenzie clan as a healer. Even when they are separated by centuries, the romance and eventual marriage of Jamie andClaire are the core of the franchise. Gabaldon has released nine novels in the series.
Gabaldon wrote a novel called Virgins, which focused on young Jamie and Ian Murray years before they met. Variety states that the TV series may be different from the story.
Because of the show's time travel conceit, the series has already confirmed that Claire isn't the first person to use the standing stones to travel into the past. If any of the characters in the original series are in common, the prequel could even be a part of it.
Balfe and Heughan play the roles of Jamie and Claire Fraser. The series also features David Berry as Lord John Grey, John Bell as Ian Fraser Murray, and Richard Rankin as Roger MacKenzie.
The season 6 premiere will be on March 6. The season will be eight episodes long. The series will have 16 episodes for the seventh season.
