The New York Times reported that a local Ukrainian diner in New York was swarmed with guests on Thursday after news that Russia had invaded the country.

There was a line of New Yorkers stretching around the block at Veselka.

Hundreds of people gathered in Manhattan to protest against Russia's attack on Ukraine, chanting "stop the war" and holding Ukrainian flags, The Times reported.

The staff at the restaurant said a prayer before the opening.

The owner of Veselka told The Times that they were getting an "outpour of love."

One of the waitresses, called Tania Didyk, told The Times that she felt bad that her family was still in Ukraine while she was in New York.

The biggest Ukrainian community in the US is in the city.

Birchard said on the website that his grandfather opened the diner.

Potato pancakes, goulash, and pierogi are some of the traditional Ukrainian food on the menu at Veselka.

Veselka didn't respond to Insider's request for comment outside of US operating hours.
