In Alexandria, Va. A federal judge ruled Friday that a Virginia school system discriminated against Asian Americans when it changed its admissions policies. The judge found that the plan to change admissions to Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology was impermissible. The admissions process at the school was changed in 2020. A standardized test that had been a linchpin of the admissions process was scrapped in favor of a system that set aside equal numbers of TJ slots at each of the county's middle schools. The discussion of admissions changes was related to the idea of racial balancing. Black and Hispanic students were underrepresented in the student body at the school. The current freshman class at TJ reflected a significant change in racial makeup. The Asian representation decreased. The percentage of black students increased. The Hispanic representation went from 3% to 11%. The school system insisted that its new admissions policies are race neutral, as well as noting that the Panelists who evaluate applications don't know the race of the students they are evaluating. If the school board had not demonstrated a desire to harm Asian Americans, the school system argued that efforts to increase Black and Hispanic representation were permissible. John Foster, a lawyer for the school system, said the school board will consider an appeal of the ruling. The new process is blind to race, gender and national origin and gives the most talented students from every middle school a seat at TJ, according to Foster. The backdrop under which the school board acted showed that racial considerations were foremost on the mind. George Floyd's death in May 2020 prompted calls for racial justice across the country. He noted that the Virginia General Assembly and Department of Education were pushing schools like TJ to develop plans to address the lack of Black. The Board members and high-level FCPS officials wanted to remake TJ admissions because they were dissatisfied with the racial composition of the school. The Coalition for TJ, the group of parents who challenged the admissions process in court with help from the conservative Pacific Legal Foundation, said in a statement that it is thrilled by Judge Claude Hilton's clear renunciation of racism and discrimination. The ruling comes roughly a month after the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear a similar case against Harvard University. There is a The school system will appeal. There is no final decision on the appeal. Russia's attack on Ukraine has the world's attention, including celebrities who are weighing in on the crisis. Here is what they are saying.
