According to Insider, customers at a number of banks in Russia can no longer use their bank cards with Apple Pay and Google Pay due to financial sanctions on the country. The Central Bank of Russia has released a list of financial institutions that have been affected.

Sanctions issued by the EU target 70 percent of Russia’s banking network

While customers can still use bank cards from these institutions within Russia, they will no longer work abroad or make online payments to stores and services belonging to countries that issued sanctions on Russia. The Central Bank says that the bank cards themselves will still be able to be used for payments through Apple Pay and Google Pay.

The companies didn't reply immediately to the request for comment.

In Russia, Apple Pay is more popular than in the US. Russia's most popular mobile payment service was owned by Russia's Sberbank Online, followed by two other Russian payment service providers. Thirty-nine percent of Russians used Google Pay, while 20 percent used Apple Pay.

Several countries have imposed financial sanctions on Russia. According to Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, 70 percent of Russia's banking network was targeted by the European Union. Two of Russia's biggest financial institutions have been hit by sanctions by the US and the UK.
