  • Romney blamed both Obama and Trump.

  • He called out the short-sighted foreign policy of America First.

  • He had a moment in the debate against Obama.

Romney blamed the policies of both Trump and Obama for the crisis in his statement.

It is the first time in 80 years that a great power has moved to conquer a nation. The Utah Republican said in a statement that it was without justification, provocation and honor.

Romney went on to say that the US had only put forth a "tepid response" to previous Russian invasions, such as the 2008 invasion of Georgia and the 2014 invasion of Crimea.

He said that Putin's impunity follows our timid response to his previous horrors in Georgia and Crimea, our naive efforts at a one-sided reset, and the shortsightedness of America First.

Romney referred to the 1980's as a reference to the October 2012 presidential debate when Obama assailed Romney over his belief that Russia posed the most significant threat to the United States.

When you were asked what the biggest threat to America was, you said Russia. The Cold War has been over for 20 years, and the 1980's are now calling for their foreign policy back.

Romney said during a March 2012 interview with CNN that Russia was our number one foe.

It has come to be seen as prescient by some, because of the exchange that took place before the Russian invasion.

The danger of looking away from Putin is not only for the people of the nations he has violated, but also for America. Romney said in his statement on Wednesday night that a tyrant's appetite for conquest is never quenched.

Romney's criticism of Trump's "America First" foreign policy is not new.

Romney wrote in a Washington Post op-ed that the world needs American leadership.
