Mike Mignola, the Eisner Award-winning illustrator/writer and creative mind behindHellboy and its spinoff titles, has rarely ventured into outer space during his 30-year career.

Exploring the darker aspects of the supernatural horror genre is where he is most comfortable.

Radio Spaceman is a new sci-fi series that takes readers on a perilous journey to another world that will feel oddly familiar yet distinctly original to Mignola fans when the first of two parts is released by Dark Horse Comics on Wednesday.

Dark Horse reclaimed publishing rights for more Star Wars comics in 2022.

Mignola told Space.com that Radio Spaceman is his own thing. It was not anything. There are a few more sketches. It was a comic if I could find the right artist to draw it, after a couple of lines of dialogue popped into my head. Thankfully, I did. This odd little thing has breathed a lot of life into it, and now there is a whole new character and a new world completely unrelated to all the other Mignola comic book universes. Time will tell where this will go.

When a starship crash lands on a strange planet, some of the crew mysteriously disappear. Radio Spaceman is recruited to locate their location.

Radio Spaceman finds himself in a dangerous environment when he finds out about the missing crew.

The idea of building an entire world around a couple of Mike's very distinctive sketches was a little daunting, but after reading the story, there were too many interesting pieces for me to be anxious about. It was like being set free without having toDepict much of a modern setting. Mike was very encouraging if something needed another hose or face augmentation. It has been a lot of fun to work with so few restrictions.
