The big cat family includes tigers, jaguars, lions, leopards, snow leopards and pumas. Their name comes from the Hindi word "chita" which means "spotted one", according to the book "Cheetahs: Biology and Conservation".

According to the National Zoo, the speed at which cheetahs can sprint is up to 70 mph.

What do cheetahs look like?

The average size of an adult cheetah is 2.5 feet (0.8 meter) tall at the shoulder and up to 5 feet (1.5 m) long from head to rump. Large cats can weigh between 75 and 140 pounds.

The black spots on the tan coats of the cats are similar to those on leopards and jaguars. The spots on the cheetahs are uniform in size and are evenly distributed across the whole body, except for the white throat and belly. spotted coats help chess blend into the environment when resting and stalking prey. Unlike human fingerprints, these markings are unique to each cat.

There are black tear stains on the faces of the cheselers, one trailing from the inner corner of each eye down to the mouth.

The San Diego Zoo says that the coleras have long, slender bodies and powerful legs that allow them to stretch their bodies when sprinting.

In 2.5 seconds, the chevelles can go from 0 to 45 mph (72 km/h). The fastest cars in the world can go from zero to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds, according to Consumer Reports. According to Guinness World Records, the peak speed of the fastest human on Earth was 27.34 mph, achieved in a race in 2009. It is not possible for a person to outrun a cheetah on foot.

According to the San Diego Zoo, chess can execute quick turns even in midair, thanks to their long tails. Their semi-retractable claws, which are more dog-like than cat-like, provide great traction during sprints and sudden changes in direction.

Where do cheetahs live?

According to The Times of Israel, the Asiatic cheetah is all but extinct, despite being native to Africa and Asia.

According to the African Wildlife Foundation, only 10% of the historic range is currently occupied by cheetahs. The animals are mostly found in North Africa, the Sahel, East Africa, East Africa, and southern Africa.

There is a small population of critically-endangered Asiatic cheetahs in Iran. The Times of Israel reported that in January of 2022, Iranian officials said that only a few animals remained in the country.

The cheselers don't have a single home location where they seek shelter all the time. The nomadic cats have home territories or ranges, which can be anywhere from 5 to 962 square miles. They prefer to sleep under trees or on rocky outposts when they aren't actively hunting.

How do cheetahs socialize?

Male and female cheetahs live in small groups calledcoalitions, which are made up of male siblings. Females only socialize with males when they are having sex, and they raise their offspring on their own.

The litter sizes range from three to five pups. House cats typically weigh 3 to 4 ounces when they are born, but the colecrecubs are not much larger than 140 to 280 grams. Cubs have all their spots, as well as mane-like hair on their neck and shoulders. The San Diego Zoo says that themantles disappear as thecubs age.

The life of a cat.

When a baby is about 6 months old, its mother starts teaching it to hunt and avoid lions, eagles, and humans. The AWF says that only a small percentage of cheetahs survive to adulthood under the mother's watch.

After the female siblings leave the group to live on their own, the littermates stay together for another six to eight months. Men tend to stick together in coalitions of two or three to protect their territories. According to the San Diego Zoo, Lone males are not common and do not survive long on their own.

The male cheetahs reach sexual maturity around age 2. The coalition looks for a new home range far away from their mother's range. Male territories can range from 5 to 10 square miles to 26 to 50 square miles.

Young females stay closer to home, sometimes even living the same range as their mother. Their home ranges are more extensive than those of males and can cover up to 960 square miles.

The average life span for a cheetah in the wild is 8 to 10 years. They can live up to 15 years in captivity due to human care and a lack of natural predators.

What do cheetahs eat?

Birds, hares, warthogs, gazelles and young wildebeest are some of the small- to medium-size animals that the chess prey on.

During daybreak and dusk, cheetahs hunt and catch prey. cheetahs suffocate their prey by squeezing their throat with their strong jaws, rather than sinking their teeth into their prey's flesh, because their teeth are shorter than those of other big cats.

According to The Maryland Zoo, chess don't initiate their chase until the target animal starts to flee. If a lion approaches before the cheetah can eat its meal, it will often abandon its catch to avoid conflict.

What does a cheetah sound like?

The large cats can not roar. They can mimic the sound of a house cat.

Why can't cats roar?

Compared with other big cats, such as lions, tigers and leopards, they have a widevocabulary.

The vocalization seems to have a meaning. Various types of chirp could be a mother giving instructions to her children or a female trying to get a male to mate with her.

Are cheetahs endangered?

According to the International Union for the Protection of Nature's (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species, most of the cheetahs are considered vulnerable, meaning their populations are in decline and the species is likely to become extinct.

According to National Geographic, some scientists have pushed for the status of the cheetah to be changed from vulnerable to threatened. There were an estimated 7,000 or so cheetahs left in the wild as of June 2021.

In 1900, there were at least 100,000 cheetahs living in Western Asia and across Africa. The cats are extinct in at least 13 of their native countries and have lost as much as 90 percent of their original range. A group of 2,500 are the largest population of cheetahs in the world.

According to the AWF, the steep population decline is tied to habitat loss, human conflict, and illegal trade.

Efforts are being made to help the population rebound. The AWF and other groups work with communities near the cheetah populations to create sustainable solutions for agriculture and population growth so that both the cats and humans have enough space. The Cheetah Experience in South Africa is a protected area and a wildlife park.

The San Diego Zoo and the National Zoo have captive breeding programs. The programs are trying to overcome the lack of genetic variation.
