Russia is taking action to partially block access to Facebook within the country, accusing the U.S. social media firm ofcensoring state media. The sun set on the second day of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Russia's communications and tech regulators claimed that Facebook had restricted the accounts of four Russian media outlets. The company was told to lift the alleged restrictions and provide explanations for why they were introduced. Russia says Meta never responded.
According to the statement, the Prosecutor General's Office and the country's Foreign Ministry decided to recognize Facebook as being involved in the violation of fundamental human rights and freedoms. The government claimed that Facebook has blocked state media 23 times.
The new President of Global Affairs at Facebook said in a post that the regulator had asked the social network to stop fact-checking Russian state-owned media.
