The invasion of Ukraine by Russia is affecting technology trade shows. Some Russian companies will not be allowed to exhibit at the Mobile World Congress in February, according to reports. The wireless industry association didn't say which companies were barred from attending, but it did say that there wouldn't be a Russian Pavilion to showcase that country's mobile products.

There are no plans to delay or cancel the event. The organization said on its website that it would honor sanctions against Russia. The companies are on the sanctions list. The measures only allow mobile devices if they are not sent to Russian government workers or affiliates.

Russian companies can buy dedicated show floor space that will give them a presence at trade shows. Those companies that were leaning on the Russian Pavilion for a presence will be affected by the main ban.

Tech is becoming a battleground for Russia and its Western opponents. The social media companies have taken steps to protect Ukranians and those tracking Russian military movements. Russia has limited access to Facebook in response to the actions of four Russian media outlets. Whether it wants to or not, the GSMA is involved in politics that could affect the mobile world at large.
