A senior U.S. defense official said Friday that the Russian navy is landing troops in southeastern Ukraine. The official said that the assault is taking place west of the city of Mariupol on the Sea of Azov.
Some Russian troops based in the southern part of the peninsula have begun to move northeast toward Mariupol, splitting off from a group of troops from the peninsula who invaded Kherson.
Russia's overall force will be made up of a small part of troops invading by sea. Russia only has enough amphibious ships to land several thousand naval infantry.
The senior U.S. defense official said the line of advance near Kyiv is slower than expected.
