President Joe Biden will make a nomination to the Supreme Court, according to a message from the POTUS account. Jackson is the first black woman to be nominated to the nation's highest court.
I am proud to announce that I am nominating Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to serve on the Supreme Court.
Justice Stephen Breyer announced his retirement from the Supreme Court on January 26. The news sparked speculation that President Biden would nominate the first Black woman to the Supreme Court, after he voiced intentions to do so at a 2020 news conference in Delaware.
He said during the 2020 conference that they were putting together a list of African American women who were qualified and had the experience to be in the court.
Jackson was appointed to the D.C. Circuit by President Biden last year and was rumored to be a front-runner for a Supreme Court seat. The D.C. native was a district judge in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
Her background in criminal justice reform is well known. Jackson left her role as associate at Feinberg to become a staffer at the U.S. Sentencing Commission with the aim of addressing the widespread disparity in federal sentencing.
Jackson was the vice-chair of the U.S. Sentencing Commission from 2010 to 2014, and she supported reducing the penalties for crack cocaine and addressing the sentencing disparity between Black and white offenders.
Jackson recalled at the April 2021 confirmation hearing for judicial nominees that she was shocked at how many of her clients were unaware of what happened during their trials.
She said that they had just been through the most consequential proceedings in their lives, and no one really explained to them what they were supposed to expect.
Jackson presided over the attempt by the Trump Justice Department to prevent former White House counsel Don McGahn from testifying to Congress. According to the National Law Journal, Jackson stated in a 120-page opinion that no one is above the law and that he must appear before the House.
The political leanings of the Supreme Court will not change despite Jackson's addition. There are six conservative justices and three liberal justices on the court.
The nomination of Judge Jackson contributes to President Biden's commitment to diversity in the judiciary. Five of the eight Black women he nominated have been confirmed.
