The marine who blew up the bridge to try to stop the Russian tanks was praised by officials in Ukraine.
The General Staff of the armed forces of Ukraine said that Vitaliy Skakun Volodymyrovych was positioned at the Henichesk bridge during the standoff with Russian forces.
The bridge is one of the multiple entry points into and out of Ukraine.
The statement said that Ukrainian forces blew up the bridge to fight off Russian tanks.
According to his brothers, Vitaly told them he was going to blow up the bridge.
The statement said that Volodymyrovych died.
The Ukrainian military said that Volodymyrovych helped slow down the advancement of the enemy and allowed his fellow service members to regroup and deploy defenses.
The forces plan to give him posthumous honors.
The deputy minister of foreign affairs called his actions heroic.
