People around the world have taken to the streets in solidarity with Ukraine, condemning Russia after it launched an invasion against its neighbor on Thursday and urging governments to take stronger action.
The colors of the Ukrainian flag were shone over famous landmarks in many cities.
Protesters gathered outside of Russian embassies and local government buildings to condemn the hostilities and press for stronger action against Russia.
Many carried Ukrainian flags and placards condemning the war and Russia's leader, Vladimir Putin, who was likened to Hitler in many depictions.
More than 1,700 anti-war protesters were arrested by the Russian government in more than 50 cities across the country.
The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons held a small protest in Switzerland, following a threat by Putin to use nuclear weapons if other powers intervene in Ukraine. The organization, which won a peace prize for its work to eliminate nuclear weapons, condemned the invasion and urged all countries not to engage in military activities involving nuclear weapons.
