  • Legislators are trying to balance tough talk on foreign policy with isolationist slogans.

  • They say that Biden's weakness was a factor in Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

  • The only consistency is the argument that Biden could do better.

Some of the best stars in the world are charging President Joe Biden with weakness and aggression in his approach to Russian President Vladimir Putin, because of Russia's unprovoked attack on Ukraine.

Marjorie Taylor Green said that it was no surprise to anyone that Putin invaded Ukraine.

A month earlier, the Republican from Georgia accused the president of threatening war with nuclear Russia because of Biden's son's business dealings in Ukraine.

One doesn't need to go back a month to find inconsistencies. After Biden failed to promise a full-on military intervention in defense of Ukraine, Greene reverted back to the idea that Americans don't want one.

The politics of former President Donald Trump and his allies is not defined by a consistent foreign policy, but by what it is against, which is often enough. Out of power, even more traditional Republicans, such as former President George W. Bush, have fallen back on the twin arguments that Democrats are weak.

The soft spot that some on the right have for a Russian government that is seen as adhering to traditional values and challenging the elite consensus is arguably different now. Some people can't help but admire a strongman who has succeeded at making liberals look ineffectual.

In a radio appearance on the eve of the Russian attack, former President Donald Trump embraced a debunked conspiracy theory that the political elite in Ukraine colluded with Hillary Clinton during the 2016 election.

Far-right lawmakers such as Rep. Paul Gosar of Arizona praise Putin but see a Russian invasion as a bad idea.

The world thinks the Biden regime is incompetent and impotent.

One minute earlier, Gosar was complaining about the fact that Biden was ordering our border patrol to leave our border open to help Ukraine with its borders. After mocking Democrats for their concern over the fake threat of Russia, Gaetz spun Russia's invasion as a failure of the Biden administration to protect borders.

The rough pivot to the most damaging argument is not all that confusing. The constant here is politics, partisanship, and an unwillingness to fault a right-wing authoritarian who makes liberals look bad. According to these politicians, Joe Biden did something wrong when he provoked a war that was not our fight.
