Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that 13 border guards were killed in the first day of fighting on Snake Island.

Zelenskyy said in an address that the guards tried to protect the island but were resisted by Russian forces. According to a translation by The Washington Post, an adviser to the Ukrainian interior minister posted audio on Facebook in which Russian forces can be heard telling the soldiers to surrender and avoid bloodshed.

The garrison was killed in an attack.

Zelenskyy said the 13 soldiers would be honored posthumously.

Russia treacherously attacked our state in the morning, as Nazi Germany did in #2WW years. As of today, our countries are on different sides of world history. 🇷🇺 has embarked on a path of evil, but 🇺🇦 is defending itself & won't give up its freedom no matter what Moscow thinks.

Snake Island is less than 42 acres and is located off the coast of Ukraine. The island is a strategic post in the Black Sea and marks the edge of Ukrainian territorial waters.

At least 137 people have been killed in Ukraine since the beginning of Russia's invasion, according to Zelenskyy. Zelenskyy said in his address that the fate of the country depends on the army, security forces and all of their defenders.
