  • The Chernobyl nuclear plant was taken over by Russian forces.

  • Jen Psaki called the reports of the staff being taken hostage "incredibly alarming".

  • Efforts to maintain radioactivity at the site will be affected by the Russian takeover.

Jen Psaki said the White House is angry over the reports that staff at the Chernobyl nuclear plant have been taken hostage by Russian troops.

The remnants of Chernobyl were taken over by Russian forces on Thursday. The capital city of Ukraine, Kyiv, is located just south of Chernobyl, the site of one of the worst nuclear disasters in history.

The staff of the Chernobyl facility are currently being held hostage by Russian soldiers, and the US condemns it and requests their release.

The situation at Chernobyl was not clear but the hostage taking could hurt efforts to maintain the facility, which is dangerously contaminated with radioactivity from the 1986 nuclear disaster.

An adviser to the head of the plant said that Ukrainian control over the Chernobyl site was lost after a fierce battle. The former Chernobyl nuclear power plant, confinement, and nuclear waste storage facilities are not known.

Concerns were raised that the decades-long efforts to contain the nuclear disaster would be jeopardized by Russia's takeover. The dome is not clear how it would hold up to damage.
