The Parental Rights in Education bill passed largely along party lines, with every Democrat and seven Republicans voting against the legislation, which would bar instruction on sexual orientation and gender identify that is not appropriate for students.

The bill would allow parents to file lawsuits against school districts they think have violated the law.

The Human Rights Campaign says the bill would further stigmatize and isolated the LGBTQ youths who are already more likely than their peers to experience mental health issues and attempt suicide.

During the vote on the bill, Rep. Joe Harding pushed back against criticism of the bill, saying that it was not hate.

One of the bill's most controversial amendments that would have required principals to inform parents if their child came out at school was pulled earlier this week.

The bill is going to the state Senate, and if it passes there, it will go to the governor of Florida.
