The return of Venus, the first female member of TMNT, will be the culmination of the current comic book storyline.
The Fox Kids series was set in the same universe as the live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies from the 90s, as Raph, Leo, Donnie, and Mikey went up against new foes. The team found a new ally in the form of a long lost turtle named Venus de Milo, who had been exposed to the mutagen that transformed the other turtles into heroes.
After The Next Mutation ended, Venus vanished into the ether, seemingly never to be seen again. Venus was left to linger as a peculiarity even though other TMNT series and comics made vague allusions to her existence. A human member of the Foot Clan received a blood transfusion from Leonardo and was transformed into a turtle by Tom Waltz, Ken Garing, andSophie Campbell. After the introduction of her transformation, she is no longer the sole female Turtle on the block.
Campbell said in a press release that he had been trying to make a Venus comeback happen.
It has been amazing to watch the kind of character-driven storylines that have always been the foundation for what makes the Turtles so beloved and eternal. She's doing it in a good way, just in time for the Armageddon Game event, which is a great way to make the old feel new again.
Next month, Venus will make her debut in the movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #127. The team has been investigating the mutagenic bomb explosion in Mutant Town as part of the ongoing arcs that have seen the Turtle brothers struggle to keep the peace. You can see what they uncover in the cover of TMNT #128 by watching it here on io9!
The current TMNT storyline will end in TMNT #130, but the story will continue in the form of IDW's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Free Comic Book Day issue, due out May 7 as part of the annual comics celebration. Check out the full cover artwork for the Free Comic Book Day Release, which shows Venus stalking her Ninja turtles from the shadows.
On March 16th, TMNT #127 will be on shelves.
