Apple service technicians might be able to make Face ID repairs on newer phones without the need to replace the entire device.

Apple may soon give Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers access to a new TrueDepth Camera service part that consists of Face ID and front camera modules. When a phone has Face ID issues, stores and authorized providers will perform same-unit repairs instead of replacing the device.

According to an internal memo provided to MacRumors, the move will reduce the carbon footprint of its products by decreasing the number of whole-unit repairs. If it happens, owners of the newer models of the phone won't need to set up a new one because of the Face ID problem.

It is not clear when this new repair process will be implemented. The company told technicians that they will get training and documentation at a later date.

The new self service repair program was announced by Apple a few months ago. Through the initiative, Apple will teach customers how to fix their devices at home. When customers return used parts, they will receive recycling credit.

The self service repair program will be launched in the US early this year, and then expand to other countries later.
