Art Briles, who was fired as the head coach of the Bears in 2016 after an investigation into allegations of sexual assault, has been hired as the offensive coach at Grambling State.
Jackson was hired as the head coach of Grambling State in December.
After sexual assault allegations were made against students, including football players, Briles was suspended with intent to fire for his role. He won a share of the Big 12 titles in both of his years at Baylor, and later reached an undisclosed financial settlement with the school.
In August, the NCAA placed the university on four years of sanctions, but ruled that Briles and the university did not violate its rules. The Committee on Infractions said it couldn't conclude that Briles violated NCAA rules by failing to report sexual and violence committed on the campus.
Current NCAA rules do not allow the Committee on Infractions to penalize schools for how they handle sexual violence issues, despite the fact that a former president of the school described the school's handling of the issue as a "colossal operational failure".
Briles was the coach of an American football team in Italy. He was hired by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League in August of last year, but the team withdrew their offer the day after receiving backlash.
Southern Miss coach Jay Hopson tried to hire Briles as his team's offensive coordinator, but he was overruled by the university president.
He is a man who deserves a second chance, according to Hopson. He may not have acted in a proper manner, but that should be my job at Southern Miss. Even though he will be a head coach at a major program in the near future, he was interviewing for an assistant position.
In September 2020, Hopson resigned as Southern Miss coach.
Briles was the head coach at Mount Vernon High School in Texas.
The investigation into the handling of sexual violence complaints at the school culminated in the firing of football coach Art Briles and the demotion of president Ken Starr. McCaw and Starr left after.
Pepper Hamilton, a Philadelphia law firm, was hired by the school to investigate whether the school properly handled allegations of sexual assault by students, including football players. The findings of Pepper Hamilton described the football players at Baylor as being above the rules with no culture of accountability.
According to Pepper Hamilton, its findings reflect significant concerns about the tone and culture within the football program as it relates to accountability for all forms of athlete misconduct.
A jury found Ukwuachu guilty of sexually abusing a former soccer player. He was dismissed from Boise State by coach Chris Petersen. Ukwuachu was kicked off the team.
Oakman was accused of sexually assault a graduate student in April 2016 after he was kicked off the team at Penn State. A jury found Oakman not guilty.
In January of 2014, a jury found Tevin Elliott guilty of raping a student at an off-campus party. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison. He was accused of sexually abusing four other women while he was at the school.
Briles said in an interview that he accepted responsibility for the poor handling of sexual assault allegations involving players.
Briles apologized for the bad things that happened under his watch. I was wrong. I apologize. I am going to learn. I will get better.
Briles understands why players on his team would be upset with him.
I would tell them I was sorry. He said that there is no place for it in society. I will never put up with it and I have never condoned it.
These players are part of the program. It reflects on me and the university when they do wrong. I feel responsible.
