More than 1,000 rodents were found inside a distribution center in Arkansas and Family Dollar is closing more than 400 stores in six states.

The story was first reported by USA Today.

The stores that may have sold products from the contaminated facility were listed in the news release. Insider previously reported that the company was working with the FDA to begin a voluntary recall.

The company temporarily closed the affected stores in order to conduct the voluntary recall of certain FDA-regulated products. Our teams are working hard to reopen these stores.

Family Dollar didn't say when the stores would reopen.

Stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, and Tennessee are affected.

On the day of the recall, the FDA issued a statement saying that the investigation was prompted by a consumer complaint. The inspectors reported live rodents, dead rodents in various states of decay, as well as dead birds and bird droppings.

Purchases made in January and February include human food, pet food, dietary supplements, cosmetics, medical devices, and over-the-counter medications.

We take situations like this very seriously and are committed to providing safe and quality products to our customers.

The recall does not apply to products shipped directly to the stores by the distributor or manufacturer, according to the initial news release.

Family Dollar is not aware of any consumer complaints or reports of illness related to this recall.
