The Chernobyl Exclusion Zone is one of the most radioactive places on Earth, with shelling threatening buried nuclear waste storage sites.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the tragedy of 1986 will not be repeated and that this is a declaration of war against the whole of Europe.

The New York Times writes that Chernobyl strategically lies on the shortest path between Russia and Ukraine. The exclusion zone is called because of the health risk that remains more than three decades after the 1986 explosion and disaster.

Last month, as tensions between the two nations increased, Ukraine sent troops to theerie and still radioactive forest near the former reactor, where they carry both weapons and equipment to detect radiation exposure.
