Air New Zealand will begin nonstop flights to Newark in October 2020. The launch of that flight was delayed by the Pandemic, but we now have an updated timetable for this becoming a reality.

Air New Zealand launching Auckland to Newark route in 2022

Air New Zealand CEO Greg Foran announced today that the airline will begin service to Newark in 2022. He explained it during a presentation.

“Looking further out to the end of this calendar year, we will be ramping up more passenger flights to North America and looking forward to starting up our direct service to New York City.”

The plan was for the airline to start this route 3x weekly with the following schedule.

The flight from New Zealand to Newark leaves at 7:55PM and arrives at 5:35PM.

The flight from Newark to New Zealand arrives at 6:45AM (2 days).

This would be one of the longest flights in the world, at 8,810 miles in each direction. The plan was for the flight to be blocked at 15hr40min in the east and 17hr40min in the west.

It is possible that this service launching is contingent on New Zealand easing border restrictions. New Zealand's plan to take a phased approach to reopening borders has been outlined by the Prime Minister. There isn't a definite time frame for when the country will open borders to foreigners.

Demand for nonstop travel is higher than ever, as people look to make their journeys as easy as possible.

Air New Zealand plans to fly to Newark

What plane would Air New Zealand fly to Newark?

Air New Zealand will use a Boeing 787-9 on the Newark route. The route should be close to the aircraft. The 787-9 flight could potentially face more winds than the Qantas Perth to London flight, based on how jet streams work.

Air New Zealand plans to use a heavy Boeing 787-9 for the route. There are 27 business class seats, 33 premium economy seats, and 215 economy seats. Air New Zealand is rumored to be introducing an all-new business class product.

Bottom line

Air New Zealand has a plan to start a nonstop flight from Auckland to Newark before the end of the year. It's anyone's guess if that timetable sticks, given that New Zealand still hasn't committed to a timetable for a border reopening.

It would be one of the most exciting new routes that we have seen in a long time.
