  • China told its citizens in Ukraine to stay at home or display the national flag.

  • On the same day that Russia attacked Ukraine, the Chinese embassy made an announcement.

  • Other nations have urged their citizens to leave.

In the hours after Russia launched an attack on Ukraine, the Chinese embassy in that country advised Chinese nationals to stay at home or display the Chinese flag on their cars.

The embassy wrote in a safety reminder on Thursday that social order is chaotic and out of control when there are periods of serious unrest.

It is best to stay at home and away from windows and glass to avoid accidental injury.

The embassy told citizens that if they have to travel by car, they should take note of where to refuel and should have the Chinese flag on their car.

The embassy encouraged Chinese nationals in the country to help each other, suggesting that wealthier Chinese businessmen or Chinese citizens more familiar with Ukraine should offer assistance to the more inexperienced.

Chinese citizens were not told to leave the country.

Other countries have advised their citizens to leave Ukraine or be ready to leave, as explosions were heard from Kyiv to the eastern city of Kharkiv, and as Russian tanks were reported to have crossed the border.

The South Korean embassy strongly urged its citizens to leave Ukraine just before Putin made a surprise announcement that Russia would launch a military action against the country.

The US, UK, Japan, and Israel have all told their citizens to leave as fears of a Russian invasion grew.

The New York Times reported that the embassy's advisory came as China's foreign ministry refused to describe Russia's attack as an invasion.

On Tuesday, the state-owned media outlet appeared to have accidentally published a memo instructing Chinese media not to publish anything positive to Russia or the West.
