At least 40 Ukrainian soldiers and 10 civilians have been killed in the first hours of Russia's invasion of the country, as another official confirmed on Thursday, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the snapping of all diplomatic ties with Russia.
Multiple explosions were reported in the capital of Kyiv, the second largest city of Kharkiv, and the eastern city of Kramatorsk after Putin announced Russia's special military operation.
The Ukrainian State Border Guard said the country was facing an attack from the north as Russian troops moved in.
Security cameras captured footage of Russian military vehicles entering Ukraine from the Crimean peninsula.
Many people were forced to take shelter in subway stations after air raid sirens were heard.
Images from the Ukrainian capital showed long lines of cars heading out of the city on Thursday morning as more explosions began to be heard across the city.
The Russian defense ministry denied that the Ukrainian military had shot down at least six Russian planes.
