Commercial air routes could be severely disrupted as a result of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, according to the UK's Foreign Office.

The Civil Aviation Authority has been instructed by the Transport Secretary to ensure airlines avoid the airspace of Ukraine.

He said that they stood with the people of Ukraine and worked with their international partners to respond to the act of aggression.

The FCDO warned UK nationals not to cross to Ukraine from bordering states including Poland, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, and Russia.

There are reports of missile strikes and explosions in major cities, including the capital of Ukraine.

Wizz Air, which is based in Hungary, has stopped all flights in Ukraine.

Due to the current events in Ukraine, Wizz Air has to temporarily suspend all flights in the country.

The safety and security of our passengers and crew remains our number one priority and we hope normality will return to Ukraine soon.

The FCDO advised British nationals to leave Ukraine immediately if they thought it was safe.

The FCDO warned that if you cannot leave safely, stay indoors and remain alert.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine and Nato countries imposing sanctions led to a plunge in the index. James Cleverly, the UK's junior Foreign Minister, told the BBC that the UK stands with Ukrainians.

He said that the UK would be providing direct assistance to the Ukrainians.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemned Putin for bringing war back to Europe.

She said a package of sanctions will be proposed later in a bid to weaken Russia's economic base.
