Donald Trump continued to praise the leader shortly before Putin signaled the start of a military operation.

At a political event held at his Mar-a-Lago country club in Palm Beach, Fla., Trump praised the Russian dictator.

He is taking over a country for $2 worth of sanctions. He is taking over a country with a lot of people and a huge location.

The cities that are home to millions of Ukrainians heard explosions as Russia began its assault. The deaths of 50,000 civilians, 25,000 Ukrainian soldiers and 10,000 Russian troops were warned by American intelligence agencies. There is a chance that the war between the two neighbors will cause a refugee crisis.

On Tuesday, Trump praised Putin for sending troops into Ukraine to support the Russian-backed rebels.

He said on a radio program that it was genius. How smart is that? He is going to be a peacekeeper. On our southern border, we could use that. That is the strongest peace force I have ever seen. I have never seen so many army tanks. They are going to keep peace.

As he did on Tuesday, Trump assured his audience that if he were still in power, Putin would never have been able to achieve his goals in Ukraine.

It would have never happened, Trump said. I know him well and I know other people in this room besides Doc Ronny Jackson.
