Both sides made it easier to separate this year based on the changes to Rodgers' contract. Gutekunst said that he never promised Rodgers that he would trade him after the 2021 season.

What will the Packers do if Rodgers wants to play in Green Bay but not in Packers?

Gutekunst said during a news conference intended to preview next week's NFL scouting combine that he doesn't think we'll go down those roads right now.

It has been said that the Packers would trade Rodgers if he still wanted out after the 2021 season.

Gutekunst, who has full control over all roster moves, said in a separate session that he didn't tell him that.

Gutekunst said he is not tempted to take a haul of draft picks for Rodgers and that it is unlikely the Packers would play hardball and force Rodgers to play solely for them.

Gutekunst said that the Packers have a good chance to win a Super Bowl next year. That is our goal. I think we have a chance to do it. That is why.

While Gutekunst said the Packers "kind of wasted that opportunity", he wouldn't put the loss to the 49ers on Rodgers. The GM pointed out that other parts of the team couldn't pick up on a poor performance by another unit.

The Packers failed to make the Super Bowl for the second year in a row.

We are disappointed that we didn't finish it off the last two years, but there is no reason to think we can't get back there.

Rodgers told The Pat McAfee Show that he still has to think about things before making a decision. Gutekunst offered no hints as to whether he knew which way Rodgers was leaning, and the team wouldn't pressure him into making a decision.

Gutekunst could not answer the question. I think the one thing that I know for sure is that he takes it very seriously. He puts a lot into that and knows how much work it takes during the off-season to prepare himself to give to our team what he does. I don't think it's easy for him to prepare for a season, so he's going through his process to make sure he knows he wants to do that.

While they wait, the Packers are in a holding pattern.

Gutekunst said that everything around here centers on the quarterback. As we go through this and the puzzle pieces we have to try to fit, it is important. That is the first one to leave.

They restructured the contract of defensive tackle Kenny Clark to solve their salary-cap problem. A source told Field Yates that the Packers created $10.892 million in cap space by converting part of Clark's salary to a signing bonus and then adding voidable years. The Packers were $38 million over the cap for the season.

That does not include Adams. The All-Pro receiver is a candidate for the franchise tag, which can be applied between now and March 8, but Gutekunst said he views that as a last resort and that both sides would prefer to get a long-term contract done.

The future of All-Pro outside linebacker Za'Darius Smith, who missed most of last season because of back surgery, is among the team's tough choices to make.

Smith's salary-cap charge is second highest on the team to Rodgers.

Gutekunst is optimistic about the health of All-Pro left tackle David Bakhtiari, who missed the playoffs because of a knee injury.

Crosby missed nine field goals and two extra points last season but could still be in the Packers plans if Rodgers returns.

For where our football team is, having a championship kind of kicker, a guy who can compete at that level, is important.

The Packers have two other kickers on their roster.
