Nets coach Steve Nash sees a renewed sense of optimism from the 29-year-old guard that a resolution might be coming in the next.
Nash said after Wednesday's practice that he had been extremely locked in. He has been great in film sessions. He is creating dialogue over parts of our play. I feel a real focus from him. I would say he is getting excited at the thought of being able to play in all our games and hopefully in the short term.
Nash's comments come in the wake of New York City Mayor Eric Adams saying earlier Wednesday that he was optimistic a vaccine mandate would eventually be phased out, which would allow unvaccinated workers.
Adams told reporters on Wednesday that he could not wait to get it done, when asked if New York City was going to start phasing out vaccine restrictions like Boston, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. I am proud of how we responded as New Yorkers. I meet with my health professionals every morning. I always said I was going to follow the science. I am not going to get ahead of the science because I am ready to get back to normal.
They are giving us clear instructions and we are going to follow them. I don't have to wonder what you look like when you go through a real transformation in the next few weeks. We are going to get the city back up and running. We are going to be rolling out some things in the next day or so on how we are going to carry that out.
Nash was pleased when he was briefed on the comments of Adams, but the Nets remain in a holding pattern as to when the reversal might finally come down.
Nash said it would be great to have Kyrie available for all of the games. We will leave it to the mayor and wait, because it is not in our control.
Nash thinks Irving will be ready to play in every game once the mandate is lifted. There are only 23 regular-season games left for the Nets.
Nash said that if the mandate is lifted, the expectation would be that he can play in all the games. I think that is what he has been waiting for, and if the opportunity arises, the plan is to play every night.
The Nets wouldn't make him available for comment after he went through Wednesday's practice. James Johnson spoke to a lot of Nets personnel about Irving.
Johnson said that they would love for him to play. Hopefully soon we can have him with us.
