Jimmy Garoppolo may still be in San Francisco.

It's not a lock that the 49ers will trade their starting quarterback this year, according to Adam Schefter.

Garoppolo believes he will be moved this summer, and it still seems likely a trade will happen. However, he was probably further behind than people realized.

The 49ers traded three first-round picks, along with a third-round pick, to move up to take Lance with the third pick. The team is pleased with how Lance has progressed but that he was a bit greener than expected after only playing one college game in 2020 and spending his career at North Dakota State.

Lance appeared in six games last season and threw for 603 yards and five touchdown against two picks, and added 168 yards and a score as a runner. The 49ers went 1-2 in his starts.

Garoppolo is 35-16 in his career as a starter with the 49ers. Garoppolo was the quarterback for the 49ers in the last two seasons. The 49ers have gushed about Garoppolo, even though he didn't set the world on fire.

According to Josh Schrock of NBC Sports Bay Area, Fred Warner said of Garoppolo that he has been the guy all along. We see it every day in practice, because he is dicing us up. Jimmy is our leader. He is our quarterback. We rolled behind him the entire way.

The 49ers elimination from the playoffs came with the knowledge that Garoppolo would likely be his last game for the team. The team has been very upfront about Garoppolo's future.

I just want to go to a place where they want to win, I told reporters.

Garoppolo will make $24.2 million in base salary in the final year of his contract.
