The Philippines signed a 6 billion-peso deal to buy 32 Black Hawks in the largest military aircraft acquisition contract under the outgoing President.

The S-70i Black Hawks can be used for troop transport, combat operations and disaster response, and the Defense Secretary signed the deal with the president of PZL Mielec. The training package for pilots and maintenance crews is part of the deal.

The Department of Budget took a long time to allocate funds for the deal because the president's six-year term ends on June 30.

We barely made it, but we will be happy to see the improvement of the Philippine air force.

Due to financial constraints, the Philippines has struggled for years to upgrade its military, one of the most underfunded in Asia, to deal with decades-long Muslim and communist insurgencies and to defend its territories in the disputed South China Sea.

The Philippine air force will be able to retire its aging Bell UH-1 helicopters thanks to the acquisition of the Black Hawks. Lorenzana said that they are still flying the Hueys after the U.S. dropped them.

The Philippines acquired 16 Black Hawks from PZL Mielec, all of which have been delivered and used widely to respond to the widespread damage caused by a powerful typhoon in the central Philippines in December.

Six air force personnel were killed when one of the 16 helicopters crashed during night flight training in northern Tarlac province.
