The classic Hangouts messaging service will disappear next month as part of the transition to Google chat. Users will be diverted to chat when they try to use the old Hangouts mobile apps or visit the web after March 22nd, when the default chat application will be made by Google.

The latest step in the evolution of the messaging strategy of the company is the shift from the popular hangout to the chat service. The messaging service integrated with Gmail was the focus of this particular migration. The unofficial name for Gchat, which was killed off in 2017, should not be confused with the real thing.

There will be a few special cases in which the conversation histories will be kept. It is not possible to opt out of this transition, but the hangouts.google.com domain will continue to work.

The change is only affecting the users of the workspace. It is impacting people who use the services of a business or organization. According to 9to5Google, free account users will go through the same transition after workspace.
